Why Hero’s Are Important

By Danny Cavanaugh

A hero is someone who is idolized for their courage and strength.

Throughout school we’ve learned about Greek Mythology and the many hero’s including Hercules and Achilles.

So, why care about a hero? What really is a hero?

A hero can be anyone from a war veteran, school teacher, professional athlete, or your parents.

These people are very important because they give people hope, aspiration, courage, and motivation when life brings them down.

Of course there’s always the thought of the hero battling evil.

Now my hero growing up was Jason Varitek (Red Sox catcher). He was a leader on and off the field, he was tough, and he was loyal to his organization and teammates around him.

He was the whole reason why I was a catcher growing up and all the way in college at Shoreline Community College.

Here he is giving A-Rod a face-full of catchers mitt. Big thumbs up for that one.

A hero is important to give dreams to young kids.

They can show us that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.

Of course what would we do without the hero’s of every major war we’ve been engaged in throughout our American history.

They protect our very way of life.

Hero’s exist everywhere.

One thing I’ve learned is you can be your own hero. Figuring out a path in your life and facing adversity is a hero attribute.

So, what is a hero? Do they have to battle evil? Do they have to be strong physically?

The answer is no.

Sure, there are hero’s who are big and strong and fight against evil. There’s also the teacher who helps students in need to get a good education. A hero can simply make someone smile every day to make them feel alive and encourage them to want success in their life.

We can all be hero’s.

In your own life, or in somebody else’s life.

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” – Christopher Reeve
